After finding the mouth of the Mississippi River, they sailed upstream and named the spot Point du Mardi Gras (Mardi Gras Point). A traditional Catholic celebration ensued leading to what many refer to as North America's first Mardi Gras. Afterwards, the French province of Louisiana has the claim to the first Mardi Gras. Eventually, what we now know as Mobile became the official capital of the Province in 1704. As time passed, carnival celebrations became an annual event, and were highlighted by lavish balls and masked spectacles. Although some were small, private parties with select guest lists, others were raucous and large public affairs celebrations. During the past century, Mardi Gras celebrations have expanded to several major cities in the U.S. as the event contributes to help local economies bring revenues.
Our home town, Lafayette, Louisiana, always has a large Mardi Gras celebration. Since it is smaler and, perhaps, less well known as New Orleans, its Mardi Gras celebrations are generally family-oriented. Geographically, Lafayette is the heart of Cajun Country, and draws Cajuns and Creoles from all of the surrounding area to participate in its Mardi Gras festivities. The Cajun hospitality and cuisine are enjoyed by visitors and locals. The population is approximately 90% Catholic which contributes to Mardi Gras? popularity.
