While invitations have been around for centuries, the concept of sending out Christmas invitations or wedding invitations didn’t really start to become popular until the start of the 20th century. The printing press appeared in Europe in the mid 13th century and was used primarily for newspapers, flyers and books. It finally began to get popular of mass production of Christmas invitations and other social invitations when people who were wealthy started to become fascinated with industrialization. This in turn showed wealth, sophistication and lead to much larger parties.

But, commercially printed Christmas invitations and such didn’t really become popular in United States until just after World War II. People are not sure why this is, but many people feel that one of the great features of the
combination of democracy with industrialization was to give the common man the ability to mimic the life-styles of society’s elite. It’s very fascinating to truly see how far invitations have come, they once were hand written to show education and wealth, then were massed produced by printing press with engravings to show wealth and are now purchased from invitation companies to show that we care about our friends and family and want them to join us in celebrating the precious moments of our lives.
